Brain Gym, a readiness for learning programme, is part of Educational Kinesiology, and grew out of clinical studies started in 1969 by Paul E. Dennison PhD, an educational therapist, who was looking for ways to help children and adults who had been identified as having learning difficulties. Children are born with a fully developed physical brain, however the neurological networks are only partially developed. As they progress through childhood they increase these connections through developmental stages, such as crawling, which develops simultaneous use of both cerebral hemispheres. The increasing integration of brain, senses and body results in a natural ease in learning. When the neural circuitry is not fully activated, for a variety of reasons, this may prevent us from realising our potential, sometimes resulting in learning challenges, such as dyslexia, dyspraxia or Attention Deficit Disorder.
Brain Gym is a movement-based programme involving simple movements which are specifically designed to activate the whole brain and to prepare the person physically for learning. The programme draws on scientific research in various fields, including kinesiology, the science of body movement, and enhances academic skills such as reading, writing and maths as well as listening, co-ordination, attention and communication skills.
Brain Gym can be used by anyone, of any age, skill or level of development. Teachers and children in the classroom, in sports, the performing arts and business and by those who find learning more challenging, use it.
