McTimoney Chiropractic began in the 1950's when John McTimoney sought treatment from a chiropractor for a damaged arm. He was so impressed with his treatment that he decided to study the method, and quickly became a talented healer. He began to experiment with the technique, refining the movements and incorporating the whole body into a treatment - his school was established in 1972.
A McTimoney Chiropractor will always start a treatment by taking a full case history, with many questions on past accidents, falls, injuries and illnesses. The client is then asked to undress down to their underwear and the practitioner will examine by hand the bones and joints of the body to check for any imbalances - however subtle they may be. The method used for correcting and imbalance is called the toggle-recoil, which is used to change the tension surrounding a joint - it is not a forced movement but rather a rapid thrust followed by an immediate release. The treatment is relatively gentle to receive as it uses the natural elasticity of tendons to help relieve muscle tension.
McTimoney Chiropractic is said to aid RSI, tennis elbow and carpal tunnel syndrome. It is also used to treat migraines, back and joint pain and digestive problems. The extreme gentleness of the technique means it is suitable for babies through to the elderly.
